La résidence Birch s’insère dans un développement du début du 20e siècle de la ville de Saint-Lambert, à proximité du cœur villageois. Ce secteur, aujourd’hui un quartier résidentiel paisible, est caractéristique du paysage suburbain lambertois ayant historiquement attiré un grand nombre de Montréalais par son architecture pittoresque et son couvert végétal considérable. Le bâtiment d’origine offre une architecture et une matérialité généreuses. À l’extérieur, un revêtement de brique rouge peignée et un toit traditionnel de tôle galvanisée à baguettes enveloppent la maison. À l’intérieur, les planchers de bois, les boiseries et les moulures ornementales typiques de cette période nous transportent dans l'élégance domestique du siècle dernier. Ce charme d’époque était toutefois accompagné de frictions entre une conception composée de pièces cloisonnées et des circulations enchevêtrées, et le mode de vie d’une famille contemporaine.

N'osant renoncer au caractère de cette résidence, le défi fut de respecter l’existant en soulignant ses qualités, tout en réalisant des interventions pondérées afin d’adapter le bâti aux souhaits et besoins actuels. En tentant de corriger certaines maladresses d’interventions précédentes, l’objectif était d’offrir des espaces fluides, lumineux, épurés, spacieux et ouverts sur la cour, sans dénaturer la maison. Aux interventions à même le bâtiment d’origine s’ajoute ainsi la construction d’un volume compact vers l’arrière du terrain, au creux du jardin, accueillant une cuisine.

La nouvelle composition du plan établit deux axes principaux au rez-de-chaussée : d’une part, un axe de services et de circulation, et d’autre part un axe logeant une série de pièces de vie. L’axe de circulation lie les espaces servants et accueille une pièce multifonctionnelle, utilisée comme salle de jeux. Les pièces de vie principales, situées dans le second axe, se distribuent en une enfilade : séjour, salle à manger, cuisine, terrasse. Ainsi, la cuisine n’appartient plus aux espaces de services, mais devient bel et bien une espace de vie au cœur des activités familiales. Les deux axes sont connectés à des emplacements précis, afin d’assurer une fluidité spatiale, sans compromettre la quiétude de chaque espace.

La modification de l’agencement intérieur crée un noyau autour duquel gravitent les activités quotidiennes. Autrefois isolée, la nouvelle cuisine est désormais le centre de l'attention, permettant un flux naturel et une connexion entre les pièces du rez-de-chaussée et l’extérieur. Les caractéristiques de la maison y sont réinterprétées de façon contemporaine, entre autres par le bois teint et la mouluration. Les fenêtres à carreaux font place à de grandes ouvertures en coin, baignant de lumière les espaces intérieurs et offrant des vues cadrées sur le jardin, depuis les pièces existantes du rez-de-chaussée. Avec une palette de matériaux inspirée de l’esthétique d’origine, les intérieurs jouent sur les contrastes inhérents entre la chaleur du bois et la froideur du béton; entre la délicatesse du chêne et l’âpreté de la pierre frittée. Apportant texture et profondeur, le plafond de la cuisine est constitué de solives de bois peint laissées apparentes. Elles rythment visuellement le parcours et structurent les interventions sous-jacentes.

Bien que le site possédait des qualités paysagères indéniables, le niveau du rez-de-chaussée du bâtiment existant se trouvait élevé par rapport à la topographie naturelle, permettant difficilement de profiter du jardin. Tout en offrant des dégagements sous plafond plus généreux pour la cuisine, l’encastrement de l’agrandissement reconnecte graduellement les espaces intérieurs avec la cour arrière. La terrasse extérieure se trouve ainsi en continuité avec les fonctions du bâtiment, et fait office de socle autour duquel s’articule l’aménagement paysager.

À la fois étranger et familier, mystérieux et manifeste, l’agrandissement tranche sans heurter. Prisme franc de maçonnerie, en écho à la matérialité d’origine, le nouveau volume établit un contraste formel avec le bâtiment du début du siècle, couronné sobrement d’une tôle rappelant la toiture à versant adjacente. Les façades, reflets des usages intérieurs, se composent de surfaces de pleins et de vides, alternant entre brique et verre, gravité et légèreté. 

Dans le cadre d’interventions sur un bâtiment existant, l’intégration de caractéristiques modernes, dont la composition architecturale, la sélection de finis ainsi que la conception formelle, se doit d’être réalisée en tout respect du patrimoine. Cette volonté se caractérise par des détails, des volumes, des matériaux et des surfaces tactiles qui mettent en valeur les qualités intrinsèques de la résidence et de son contexte paysager. L’encombrement et l’ornementation superflus sont soustraits, en veillant toutefois à ce que l’intérieur épuré demeure propice au confort et aux rassemblements.

Le manque d’accès à la médecine familiale dans le quartier montréalais de Parc-Extension était aussi grand que les opportunités de construction neuve y étaient faibles. Les propriétaires ont donc arrêté leur choix sur un bâtiment existant pour implanter leur clinique, qui comprend un département de médecine familiale, de pédiatrie et d’urgences mineures.


Le bâtiment d’origine en maçonnerie massive à charpente de gros bois d'œuvre nécessitait une remise en état afin de remplir adéquatement ses nouvelles fonctions. De cette contrainte découle une volonté de minimiser les interventions sur la charpente, notamment le plancher de madrier massif, afin de conserver la logique structurale simple et rationnelle du bâtiment d’origine. Similairement, les façades de brique ont été restaurées mais peu altérées.

Au rez-de-chaussée, la clinique d’urgences mineures est subdivisée en trois secteurs : attente, consultations, administration. Le war zone, espace pour l’administration et la prise de notes, s’articule linéairement le long d’une façade, le personnel médical bénéficiant ainsi d’une lumière naturelle diffuse, éclairant en second jour les espaces de consultation et d’attente.

À l’étage, les espaces sont distribués selon une logique circulaire, les salles de consultation étant disposées en périphérie du volume, les espaces administratifs et la circulation se trouvant au cœur du bâtiment. Trois généreux puits de lumière sont percés afin de diriger la lumière naturelle au centre du volume.

La conception des espaces est simple et lumineuse, sobrement accentuée par le mobilier intégré d’érable, afin de laisser place en premier plan à l’humain.

La résidence Louis-Hémon s'inscrit dans une réflexion sur l'évolution du plex montréalais et sa capacité à intégrer de nouveaux modes d'habiter. Implanté au cœur du tissu résidentiel de Rosemont, le duplex existant témoigne de cette typologie du milieu du 20e siècle, structurée par une circulation centrale étroite distribuant une succession de pièces cloisonnées. C'est à partir de cette trame héritée que s'élabore la conversion en résidence unifamiliale.

La trame porteuse, la condition mitoyenne et l'organisation séquentielle deviennent les fondements d'une nouvelle composition spatiale. La circulation, autrefois réduite à un corridor étroit, devient un élément structurant assurant cohésion et lisibilité entre les niveaux. Deux puits de lumière, percés au cœur du plan, viennent compléter cette requalification en baignant de lumière naturelle le centre de la maison.

Les espaces de vie s'organisent selon une séquence progressive privilégiant une gradation d'ambiances et une diversité d'usages, préservant intimité et confort tout en maintenant des relations fluides entre les pièces. La matérialité intérieure, volontairement sobre, laisse la lumière et les volumes révéler les articulations du plan.

À l'arrière, la façade est recomposée autour d'un bardage vertical en bois s'appuyant sur l'extrusion de la cheminée existante. De grandes ouvertures vitrées au rez-de-chaussée établissent une continuité directe avec la terrasse, tandis qu'à l'étage, des fenêtres plus étroites rythmées par les lames du bardage assurent lumière et discrétion aux espaces privés. Un escalier en béton bordé d'une végétation abondante articule la transition vers le jardin, envisagé comme une extension naturelle des espaces intérieurs.

Situé dans le quartier Rosemont, cet ancien duplex avait fait l’objet de plusieurs réaménagements successifs, notamment afin de le transformer en maison unifamiliale.&#38;nbsp; L’approche favorisée afin de répondre aux nouveaux besoins des occupants a été de rationaliser le programme, en exploitant le potentiel existant de la maison et en optimisant les interventions intérieures. Ainsi, plutôt que d’agrandir le bâtiment vers la cour arrière, un sous-sol est creusé, une cour anglaise est aménagée et le rez-de-chaussée est partiellement réorganisé afin de s’arrimer aux interventions précédentes.

Le sous-sol accueille désormais un ensemble d’espaces aux usages variés : une salle d’infodivertissement, une salle de bain complète, une buanderie, un cellier, deux chambres, ainsi qu’une salle mécanique. La cour anglaise assure une généreuse entrée de lumière naturelle, tout en préservant l’intimité recherchée par la famille.

L’aménagement se caractérise par une continuité matérielle forte, alliant bois d’érable et béton brut ou poli. Une paroi continue en lamelles de bois traverse le sous-sol de l’avant à l’arrière du bâtiment, intégrant de manière fluide les accès aux espaces de service, des rangements ainsi qu’une bibliothèque. Cette paroi devient un élément structurant et unifiant, apportant cohérence à l’ensemble et reliant visuellement les interventions récentes aux réaménagements antérieurs. La bibliothèque s’insérant au milieu de cette paroi de bois est conçue comme une dilatation des lamelles d’érable, assurant une uniformité à l’espace. 

Une attention particulière est portée au confort acoustique, afin de permettre des usages multiples et les horaires variés des occupants. Les équipements audiovisuels se dissimulent au décor afin de maintenir l’esthétisme épuré et la polyvalence de l’espace. Le projet allie luminosité et intimité grâce à une conception soignée des ouvertures, conciliant l’apport de lumière naturelle et le caractère enveloppant des espaces de vie. La cour anglaise agit comme puits de lumière, offrant une notion du passage des heures du jour et des saisons. L’ombre et la lumière sont mises en scène, l’architecture leur servant de toile de fond.

Ce projet offre des solutions pour agrandir sans construire davantage, valorisant l’existant par une approche sensible et rationnelle.

Le duplex Clark est conçu comme une galerie vivante qui évolue et s'adapte en permanence à une variété de besoins quotidiens. Cette conception réfléchie crée un environnement paisible, où chaque pièce offre une nouvelle perspective sur le contexte urbain environnant. Dans toute la résidence, les vues sont soigneusement mises en valeur et encadrées par l'architecture tant vers l'extérieur que l'intérieur, invitant les résidents à interagir avec chaque élément d'une manière unique et intime. Cette approche dynamique transforme la maison en un espace vivant et respirant, encourageant l'exploration et la découverte des empreintes du passé.

Cette résidence située dans le quartier Mile-End à Montréal s’inscrit dans un ensemble de bâtiments en rangée construit au début du 20e siècle. Le projet de rénovation fait renaître l’emprise originale du bâtiment en consolidant une géométrie compacte et fonctionnelle. Le nouveau plan participe à la restauration du bâtiment et rétablit l’accès au logement de l’étage au moyen d’un escalier intérieur, libérant ainsi la façade. La pierre grise à bossage est nettoyée afin de mettre en valeur le balcon, la corniche et le piédroit qui ont été reconstitués dans le respect patrimonial du secteur. La partie arrière et le nouvel étage se distinguent du volume d’origine par un revêtement de zinc à joint debout. Ce volume métallique est inspiré des hangars et autres dépendances construites dans la ruelle. À l’arrière, cette inspiration se traduit par le rappel du volume original en “L”, dont l’espace extérieur adjacent permet d’aménager une terrasse et un balcon, en continuité avec les espaces intérieurs. Cette succession d’espaces extérieurs offre une continuité entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur sur l’ensemble des niveaux, tout en apportant de l’intimité aux deux familles.

La résidence est aménagée autour d'un volume central qui divise l’espace et met en valeur chaque zone pour révéler un milieu de vie accueillant, où chaque moment invite à l'exploration et à la découverte. Des vues en constante évolution se dévoilent, reliant les espaces et les niveaux au moyen du mobilier intégré à la fois esthétique et fonctionnel.

Assumant la simplicité, l'intérieur présente des nuances qui évoquent le monde naturel pour composer un environnement immersif. Cette approche crée une atmosphère harmonieuse, où chaque détail contribue à un sentiment de tranquillité et de confort. Cette fusion de couleurs et de matériaux forme une toile de fond sereine, contrastant avec le contexte urbain hétéroclite. Les teintes douces se fondent dans l’espace, tandis que les matériaux naturels tels que la pierre et le bois sont largement utilisés, produisant une ambiance tactile et organique.

Les seuls espaces véritablement distincts sont la chambre principale et le bureau par leur emplacement à l'étage, mais même ici, une double hauteur et un escalier ajouré assurent un lien visuel entre les niveaux, préservant un sentiment d’ouverture.

Le bâtiment intègre des technologies innovantes pour rendre la vie quotidienne plus pratique et efficiente. Des systèmes de contrôle domotique permettent de gérer l'éclairage, le chauffage, la climatisation et la sécurité à distance, tout en assurant une consommation énergétique responsable. L'intégration de murs isolés à double ossature, l'installation de portes et fenêtres à triple vitrage ou encore le chauffage radiant au plancher permettent d'améliorer considérablement l'efficacité énergétique et le confort. 

La maison incarne non seulement un dialogue avec le contexte bâti, mais offre également un refuge où le temps semble ralentir, permettant la contemplation du paysage urbain. Le résultat est un sanctuaire au milieu de l’agitation de la ville.

	Résidence Laval

Sur Le Plateau–Mont-Royal, une ancienne maison de ville en pierre grise se fond avec ses voisines. Elles ont toutes été construites au 19e siècle en pierre locale et se dressent côte à côte. Il s'agit d'un paysage urbain commun dans ce secteur. En façade avant, les résidences sont semblables, la réglementation patrimoniale assurant la protection des façades visibles depuis la rue. Cette réglementation visant à préserver la cohérence du paysage urbain ne s'applique cependant pas aux intérieurs ou aux façades arrière de ces bâtiments, offrant une plus grande flexibilité architecturale et un certain éclectisme.

Cette résidence comportait plusieurs agrandissements successifs à l'arrière, dont un sous-sol en terre battue. Le programme impliquait l’ajout d’une sortie vers la cour arrière depuis le sous-sol et l’amélioration des performances thermiques de la façade sud. Un atelier de couture était aménagé au dernier étage, dans une pièce exiguë où l’éclairage naturel était insuffisant.

L’assemblage de façades arrière a été retiré, et l’ouverture résultante a été habillée de verre jusqu’à la toiture. L’atelier de couture est demeuré à son emplacement, maintenant suspendu devant un mur-rideau à double hauteur. L’arrière de la résidence est ainsi baigné de lumière naturelle et animé des ombres du feuillage des arbres avoisinants. L’accent demeure sur les éléments historiques restaurés du bâtiment, l’intervention étant pratiquement purement spatiale – un volume de lumière unissant les étages.

Ce projet de rénovation a permis de métamorphoser un duplex existant en&#38;nbsp;une résidence contemporaine tout en préservant le charme caractéristique de l'architecture domestique montréalaise. Les espaces de vie du rez-de-chaussée ont été réaménagés pour maximiser la luminosité naturelle et créer des espaces fonctionnels. Un nouvel escalier en bois relie le sous-sol, le rez-de-chaussée et l'étage. En continuité avec le puits d'escalier, un lanterneau apporte de la lumière naturelle au centre de la résidence.

L’étage est reconfiguré pour accueillir les chambres ainsi que deux salles de bain. La principale est attenante à la chambre des maîtres et comprend une douche avec bain vapeur. La seconde salle de bain est réservée aux enfants et comprend un espace buanderie. La chambre principale est une pièce vivante ayant pour seule cloison un mobilier de rangement en bois. Une bibliothèque horizontale et une marche de pierre Saint-Marc servent de seuil pour accéder au toit-terrasse.

Les architectes ont collaboré avec des artisans locaux pour créer du mobilier sur mesure et un escalier architectural. Cette approche confère au projet une touche unique et souligne l'importance de soutenir le savoir-faire local. Des éléments architecturaux tels que les portes et cadres d'origine ont été conservés pour préserver l'authenticité du lieu. L'utilisation judicieuse de matériaux naturels se marie harmonieusement avec les éléments d'origine du duplex. Les planchers d’origine de bois franc, sablés et restaurés avec soin, cohabitent avec des touches de pierre et d'acier, créant ainsi un équilibre entre tradition et modernité.

Chaque détail a été soigneusement conçu pour créer une résidence qui incarne une élégance intemporelle. En préservant le passé tout en accueillant l'avenir, cette rénovation prouve une fois de plus la résilience et l'adaptabilité du plex montréalais face à l'évolution des modes de vie.

Situé sur la pointe Est de l’île de Montréal, ce projet d’habitations s’inscrit dans une démarche de densification douce de l’arrondissement Pointe-aux-Trembles. Le terrain est situé à la rencontre entre un développement résidentiel unifamilial au Nord-Ouest et un ensemble d’habitations plus dense à l’Est. Cette dualité est accentuée par la séparation nette entre les deux. 

Le projet marque une transition plus douce par une hauteur de bâtiment décroissante depuis la rue Notre-Dame. Le site est divisé en deux lots, le premier sur la rue Notre-Dame comprend un six-plex d’échelle similaire aux bâtiments adjacents à l’est, tandis que le second, sur la rue Antoine-Chaudillon, comprend deux maisons de ville jumelées permettant une transition cohérente avec le contexte unifamilial. 

Le bâtiment sur la rue Notre-Dame adopte son propre langage. Des volumes épurés, des lignes sobres et une palette de matériaux restreinte favorisent un ensemble cohérent aux antipodes des architectures génériques avoisinantes. Les façades de briques coiffées de panneaux métalliques captent l’ombre et la lumière à l’image d’un bas relief constitué de matériaux aux teintes homogènes.

Les logements sont conçus pour accueillir des familles grâce à des superficies de plancher plus généreuses, trois chambres et deux salles de bain par unité. Des terrasses au rez-de-chaussée ainsi que des loggias aux étages supérieurs offrent l’accès à des espaces extérieurs de qualité. 

Les maisons jumelées sur la rue Antoine-Chaudillon reprennent une typologie plus similaire aux maisons avoisinantes avec des toits à versants se limitant à deux étages. Elles favorisent la transition de hauteur et d’usage entre le nouveau six-plex et les résidences unifamiliales. Réparties sur trois niveaux, ces deux unités sont conçues comme des maisons de ville avec cour avant, terrasse à l’arrière et stationnement souterrain.

	Clinique d’orthodontie Monkland
Lieu: Montréal, QuébecSuperficie: 90m2Statut: Construit, 2023La clinique d’orthodontie Monkland s’implante au rez-de-chaussée d’un bâtiment centenaire, dans l’arrondissement Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, à Montréal. Explorant la domesticité dans un cadre commercial, ce projet permet de s’attarder à des détails souvent ignorés de l’architecture d’intérieur.

Une attention particulière est accordée à la réception, traitée tel un salon avec son foyer d’origine en brique et ses banquettes. Les patients étant souvent des enfants accompagnés de leurs parents, la conception maximise les places assises grâce à de longues banquettes sur mesure en velours ceinturant l’espace. Un corridor distribue une enfilade de pièces, écho de l’aménagement d’origine du bâtiment, les équipements techniques d’un côté, les salles de consultation de l’autre. Les cloisons de verre cannelé laissent transparaître les usages subséquents de l’enfilade, tout en maintenant un sentiment d’intimité et de légèreté dans les espaces restreints de la clinique.

Dans les salles de consultation, l’accent est placé sur les plafonds, les patients allongés ayant les yeux tournés vers ceux-ci. Leur conception se veut donc chaleureuse et apaisante, les caissons de bois dissimulant les équipements électromécaniques et dentaires. Le chêne blanc accompagne le parcours du visiteur – plancher, mobilier intégré, boiseries, plafond – ponctué d’éléments contrastant de noyer.
L'intervention permet de réutiliser et de requalifier les espaces intérieurs de ce patrimoine bâti. La juxtaposition des exigences d’une pratique médicale moderne à celles d'une charpente d’origine de bois et maçonnerie massive génère des solutions uniques, autant dans les interventions structurales que dans l’organisation du programme. Le décor rend quant à lui de subtils hommages au passé du bâtiment par l’intégration de détails inspirés des intérieurs d’époque.
